One does not go to Habesha for the decor or the service, you go for the food and reasonable prices. Habesha has the best tasting Ethiopian food in Ottawa made fresh daily, no recycling of yesterdays special here. Due to the fact that many dishes are made to order, you often have to wait longer than usual for your food to arrive so if you're in a hurry, this is not the place for you. Service is friendly and unhurried and servers are used to introducing newcomers to Ethiopian cuisine. Most will opt for one of the Habesha platters which gives a sampling of many of the dishes on the menu. Should one graduate to ordering off the menu I highly recommend the Nech Yebeg Tibs (sautéed lamb with spiced butter) or Gomen Wat (Collard Green with onions tomatoes and garlic) both standout dishes. There are many tasty vegetarian options, beer is cheap $(3.25 domestic, $4.00 imports,) dinner for two, beer and tip can be had for around $40, superb value.Tasty cheap eats, recommended.
I was alone but overdid it with a platter for two. Everything was super, and I finished the whole thing. Strangely I was the only diner but I thoroughly enjoyed the quiet meal. The stews were perfect and very satisfying. Service was quick and the food came hot. As good as ever and I'll be back soon
After reading all of the glowing reviews I expected a superior experience. It was not. Yes it was authentic and The food is good, but not close to being spiced the way one would expect. The beef and lamb were both tender but in identical sauces spiced mildly. The lentils were delicious. Service is very slow so give yourself lots of time.
We moved to Ottawa 1 year ago and being vegan have struggled to find a good healthy dining experience. We happened to walk by Habesha and decided to try it for lunch. Since then, we have been frequenting it almost every 2 weeks. The staff are very friendly and the food is superb. We have eaten in many Ethiopian restaurants in both Canada
