I was in Montreal and looking forward to trying Joe Beef as it's a highly rated restaurant. The restaurant is beautiful and the customer service was good. We didn't have any reservations but were able to get a patio seat at pm. When it...came down to the food, I was quite disappointed. For the price point, I expected better. We started with one of the appetizer specials for the day, a savoury eclair. It was an eclair filled with goat cheese and then an anchovy on top. That's all it was. The goat cheese tasted like cream cheese you put in a bagel and the anchovy on top didn't make any sense. It could have been better if the eclair had something sweet and acidic (perhaps like a cherry sauce) to cut the richness of the goat cheese (or cream cheese like substance) which would add more depth and complexity to the dish. We then ordered the bread and pickles. You get a small loaf of sourdough bread and then a large pickle. It was our mistake, shouldn't have ordered it. The pickle didn't seem to make any sense with the bread. It came with a compound butter we were told. I'm not sure what made the butter a compound as it seemed to be just regular salted butter. Again, this appetizer was a disappointment. However, the crux of the meal was the lamb special we ordered. It took over minutes to get the dish. That in itself wasn't a problem because we were enjoying the ambience of the restaurant. However, when we got the lamb, it was more than just a disappointment, it was inedible. It was extremely chewy and we barely ate a of it. The pricer the lamb was Firstly, it was not worth that much money. The lamb came with some jus and grilled radicchio that had some salad dressing and again some anchovies thrown in. And secondly, the lamb was not cooked properly. It was chewy and rubbery. For you would expect the lamb to be cooked to perfection and that it would have a tender silky mouthfeel instead of chewy and rubbery. Normally I do not like to complain about my meal and I will just eat it but this was so bad that I couldn't continue. As a side dish to the lamb, we ordered the frites. The flavour was good but because they are fried and then rolled in butter, they were a bit soggy. The only good thing about the meal was the cake for dessert but even that was just okay, nothing to rave about. Overall, I think Joe Beef must be hanging on by its reputation. The restaurant was packed and I can't imagine any locals wanting to pay such an exorbitant price for such a mediocre meal, therefore, it must be kept in business by foolish tourists such as myself. As a previous reviewer said, Joe Beef is living on it's laurels.
