My husband and I enjoyed a variety of four different dishes along with garlic naan bread. Everything was so delicious and nothing was left on our plates. The service was great and so friendly. We enjoyed chatting with our server. It's also nice to hear of their involvement with orphanages. The restaurant is clean and decorated with beautiful paintings. We will definitely make a habit of dining here.

Me and my wife went a week ago to shafali as we had received a certificate. Since my wife and I only went twice to an Indian restaurant, we asked the manager who was I believe the brother of the owner. We took the platter for 2 with an appetizer for both of us. The chicken samosa was the best I ever had, flaky and nice pieces of chicken. The platter for 2 included butter chicken, goat curry and spicy vegetables and nan bread. Everything was really good, an optimum balance between curry and red chili and spices. The nan bread was the best i ever had. The only thing they could improve is the rice pudding. I am not a big fan perhaps they could have an alternate such as a scoop of ice cream. Great place, nice setting. Extremely cheap dinner. In addition, read about their involvement with orphanage in India. Great family that endorses great causes in their home country. Really worth a visit. There was a line up when we left at 8 pm on Saturday so get there before 6:45 if you don't want to wait!! Thx suzie for certificate, we will go back!

Excellent Dal soup was part of the lunch. One of us had a much enjoyed vegetable curry while my chicken tikka wrapped in naan (with secret sauce) was enough for two and excellent. Not perfect as the waiter was less than attentive despite few customers.

I'm a big fan of small Indian restaurants and always look for the ones where folks of Indian decent bring their families to eat. Shafali in the Byward district was just one of those rare spots. As soon as you enter you know there is family pride in this restaurant. From the linen on the tables, to the art hanging on the wall you know the food is going to taste as good as it smells. Upon meeting the owner we found we had a love for another Indian restaurant in common and conversation ensued. With much pride, he described how selling art handing on the wall and some of the restaurant's proceeds return to India to fund a local orphanage, feeding and employing teachers for thousands of children over the years. You could tell there was a passion in what they were accomplishing and I knew that the food would be no disappointment! I had a veg madras, wife had a chicken Dhansak, some biryani, dal soup, a couple of naans and we were once again too full of Indian cuisine. (it always happens)... a complimentary dessert and we rolled out over there too full for comfort! The bill with a couple of drinks was a usual 35$/... expected. I enjoyed this little spot and will return again when I'm back in Ottawa. The only suggestion I would have? Step up the wine selection a bit, and be sure to keep those white wines cold!
